PostSubject: A Closet Poet   5th March 2008, 6:25 pm

I have a tendency to write the occassional poem, often overly teen-angsty and/or digustingly romantic.

I'm a little hesitant as to whether or not I should post them ... they've never seen the light of day before, so I don't know if they're good or not.
Here goes ...

i explore your smile

how i would
languidly reside as a kiss
and live,
unto forever

you make happiness more than a word
that lingers, makes you linger
as i linger over yours

you catch me unawares
and tease my soul out through my lips
implore me to breath in deep

let us learn
the language between our smiles;
divided
united
undeterred

i explore your smile

Do you mean free verse, Chrisanthi? That's the only thing that ever comes to mind when I write.

Thanks so much, too. I'm still a bit nervous about sharing them. Smile

I agree and it can be good practise for my exam preps. The ones I have been doing are really hard to explain and I worry that I may struggle in them especially when I am doing my exam in June.

Yes it's a soul matter, I agree but there are certain categorisations!
a poem of the 20th century is not the same with a poem of the 17th century!
Poets themselves put their poems into these categories and accept them!

PostSubject: Re: A Closet Poet   10th March 2008, 4:40 pm

I have two more ... one is farly old, and the other is old but newly revised. I spend so much time daydreaming about the seaside. I wonder if it shows?

i hope to reach you
my love,
my end of all journeys

i would swim a thousand seas
a thousand times through the storm
just to feel my feet touch
upon your fair shore

once again,
i shall find
the end of all my journeys
in your name

in your name that becomes
my own

---

i write my forgotten secrets
on the sand;
confessions
(only the tide will understand)

next to the waves
i am romanced;
for the first time
(all over again)

i can drink love through his eyes
and dock my heart
in his hands

(everything is new
like the water on the shore)

I have to say smth as a poetess. I don't namely like to categorize my own writings and I hate when people ask me to analyze my own texts. I rather let the reader interpretate the poem in her/his mind. Suspect
Allthough as you said there's a difference between classic and modern poetry etc.

And Jenna your poems are beautiful , so stop hiding in the closet and shout out to the world I AM A POETESS!

In terms of categorizing poetry ... I think it is okay. I mean, what about haiku or tanka? Both are very beautiful when you read them, and there's nothing wrong with labelling them as such. I do like the term free verse for my own, because there is no real 'guide' for what it has to be. I'm free to play with syllables, capitalization, puncuation, rhyme ... you name it, and no one can say that it doesn't conform. I'm free free free. Smile

As for interpretation, I think it's like art. Everyone will take what they want from it. I have my own reasons and meanings in my own poems, but someone else may read it and take something from it that is entirely different. Nothing wrong with that - it's part of what makes it so beautiful, don't you think?

And you're too, too kind to me. I love you Thank you so much, Jessie. It means so much that you say that - so sweet!!

And the same for you, Em!! From someone who's got quite the portfolio of her own beautiful written work, it means a lot.

I think I can say I'm a poet; I don't think I'm ready to shout, though. Wink I write all of my poems in private, I keep them in a private book that no one else is allowed to read, and finally sharing them is a little nerve-wracking. But what with everyone's kind words, you're doing a pretty good job at inflating my ego. Wink
