I'm curious to know what the selection process in Greece looks like. Was Sakis simply picked to represent Greece in ESC 2004, or did he actually win a national qualification final where people (or jury groups) voted?

Also, what's the story about the video clip to "Shake It" where he performs in a sleeve-less white shirt with a Greek flag on it, and jeans? He performs together with two female dancers, and three back-up singers can be seen in the background. There's a ESC logo in the lower right corner. Was this a promotional video clip, or somehow part of the national competition (if there was one)?

Read this article to find out more:

Looking for a life boat for ESC 2004

It explains a lot!

Yes, indeed! Now I'm definitely wiser than I was a couple of hours ago. That was quick (this forum is amazing!!) Flowers

Is the video clip I'm asking about the one that was aired at the same time as it was officially announced that Sakis would represent Greece?

I can't really tell! I can thell you that ever since his participation was anounced, all the other news faded and Sakis was THE NEWS at every channell, newspaper radio station etc of Greece. This video is obviously one of the first rehersals (notice he doesn't do the back - flip thing or the undressing-the-the-dansers thing). But as far as I could remember, his name was anounced first and the song, danse routine etc was aired later.

Some people didn't like that. They thought that he didn't go through the proper channels and his selection wasn't fair (the winner of the talent show, Euro Star, that was organised for this purpose should have gone instead) But the truth is nobody was good enought and willing to take a risk at such a short notice.

This article might be interesting and relevant as well:

Sakis: Zero Points

I am not posying the whole thing because I think that Moldienut has already posted it at the section Press. Sakis was subject to that kind of criticism all of his career.

That was certainly interesting to read. I guess no one could imagine what kind of hit Sakis and Shake it would be. Laughing

One of the VERY FEW (if any) cd-singles (ever) that got platinum! king

The day after the eurovision, on my way to work, I was zapping through radio stations. I heard it more than 15 times in 45 minutes... bounce

The video from his performance may well be the most played-back video in the history of greek television. affraid

He also broke the all-time record of TV-rates.

It was just PANICK!!!

One journalist wrote in the paper:
"Thank God he didn't win! We would have to change the names of the airports, central squares and national roads to "Sakis Rouvas"!!!" jocolor

The Cd single went double platinum as I read in this article.

I know this article is about two years old now but here is the evidence about it being double platinum.

Read the following link.

What you said about the journalist is pretty funny, imagine places called Sakis Rouvas square, Sakis Rouvas International airport, Sakis Rouvas road, Sakis Rouvas street, a city or town renamed Rouvitsa and many barmy things you can ever think of.

I am so glad he didn't win, not because of the song being crap, but imagine Greece having to change its name to Sakiland if he ever won, that would be weird.

I don't see why that would be a problem ... except for the confusion when giving somebody directions: "First you walk along Sakis Rouvas, then you turn left on Sakis Rouvas. When you come to the crossing of Sakis Rouvas and Sakis Rouvas, turn left again and walk until you're at Sakis Rouvas Square. There you can catch a bus to the Sakis Rouvas airport. From there you can fly to Sakis Rouvas airport. Good luck!"

But I think I could live with that.

Gsus Malin, you kill me with your jokes. My head would be spinning if I would try to get somewhere with these instructions.
Yes and what comes to shake it video, my mum was in Greece last Summer and even then she said that it was playing on TV every day. And I just cant get enough of Sakis shaking in his swimming shorts.

Now that you mentioned this naming places after Sakis, when Lordi won Eurovision a square was renamed after Mr. Lordi in Rovaniemi and there was also revieled a "Hard Rock" monument in Hartola. So It wouldn't be no surprise if there would suddenly be Sakis avenues, Sakis streets and Sakis Squares or Shake It Squares everywhere in Greece. Laughing Laughing
